AL SHAMS (THE SUN)
(Revealed at Mecca – contains 15 verses – 1 section)
Allah – beginning with the name of – the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
AYAT | TRANSLATION |
---|---|
1 | وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا |
By oath of the sun and its light | |
2 | وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَاهَا |
And by oath of the moon when it follows the sun | |
3 | وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا |
And by oath of the day when it reveals it | |
4 | وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا |
And by oath of the night when it hides it | |
5 | وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا |
And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. | |
6 | وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا |
And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. | |
7 | وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا |
And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. | |
8 | فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا |
And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. | |
9 | قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا |
Indeed successful is the one who made it pure. | |
10 | وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا |
And indeed failed is the one who covered it in sin. | |
11 | كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا |
The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. | |
12 | إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا |
When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. | |
13 | فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا |
So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” | |
14 | فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا |
In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. | |
15 | وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا |
And He does not fear its coming behind (to take vengeance). | |
