AL NAJM (THE STARS)
(Revealed at Mecca – contains 62 verses – 3 sections)
Allah – beginning with the name of – the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
| AYAT | TRANSLATION |
|---|---|
| 1 | وَالنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ |
| By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. | |
| 2 | مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ |
| Never did your master stray nor did he ever leave the right path. | |
| 3 | وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ |
| And he does not say anything by his own desire. | |
| 4 | إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ |
| It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. | |
| 5 | عَلَّمَهُ شَدِيدُ الْقُوَىٰ |
| He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. | |
| 6 | ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَىٰ |
| The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. | |
| 7 | وَهُوَ بِالْأُفُقِ الْأَعْلَىٰ |
| And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. | |
| 8 | ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ |
| Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. | |
| 9 | فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ |
| So the distance between the Spectacle and the beloved was only two arms’ length, or even less. (The Heavenly Journey of Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him – was with body and soul.) | |
| 10 | فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ مَا أَوْحَىٰ |
| So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. | |
| 11 | مَا كَذَبَ الْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰ |
| The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) | |
| 12 | أَفَتُمَارُونَهُ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ |
| What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? | |
| 13 | وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ |
| And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. | |
| 14 | عِندَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنتَهَىٰ |
| Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. | |
| 15 | عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ الْمَأْوَىٰ |
| Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. | |
| 16 | إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ |
| When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. | |
| 17 | مَا زَاغَ الْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ |
| The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. | |
| 18 | لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الْكُبْرَىٰ |
| Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. | |
| 19 | أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّىٰ |
| So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? | |
| 20 | وَمَنَاةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ |
| And subsequently the third, the Manat? | |
| 21 | أَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الْأُنثَىٰ |
| What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? | |
| 22 | تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰ |
| Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! | |
| 23 | إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُم مَّا أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَانٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى الْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ الْهُدَىٰ |
| They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. | |
| 24 | أَمْ لِلْإِنسَانِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ |
| What! Will man get whatever he dreams of? | |
| 25 | فَلِلَّهِ الْآخِرَةُ وَالْأُولَىٰ |
| So (know that) only Allah is the Owner of all – the Hereafter and this world. | |
| 26 | ۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ لَا تُغْنِي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ اللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَيَرْضَىٰ |
| And many an angel is in the heavens, whose intercession does not benefit the least unless Allah gives permission for whomever He wills, and whom He likes. | |
| 27 | إِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ الْأُنثَىٰ |
| Indeed those who do not believe in the Hereafter, coin the names of angels like those of females. | |
| 28 | وَمَا لَهُم بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا |
| And they do not have any knowledge of it; they just follow assumption; and indeed assumption does not serve any purpose in place of the Truth. | |
| 29 | فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا |
| Therefore turn away from whoever has turned away from Our remembrance and has desired only the life of this world. | |
| 30 | ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ الْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اهْتَدَىٰ |
| This is the extent of their knowledge; indeed your Lord well knows one who has strayed from His path, and He well knows one who has attained guidance. | |
| 31 | وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنَى |
| And only to Allah belongs all whatever is in the heavens and all whatever is in the earth, in order to repay those who do evil for what they have done, and give an excellent reward to those who do good. | |
| 32 | الَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ إِلَّا اللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَاسِعُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ الْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ |
| Those who avoid the cardinal sins and lewdness, except that they approached it and refrained; indeed your Lord’s mercy is limitless; He knows you very well – since He has created you from clay, and when you were foetuses in your mothers’ wombs; therefore do not, on your own, claim yourselves to be clean; He well knows who are the pious. | |
| 33 | أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي تَوَلَّىٰ |
| So did you observe him who turned away? | |
| 34 | وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰ |
| And he gave a little, then refrained? | |
| 35 | أَعِندَهُ عِلْمُ الْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰ |
| Does he have knowledge of the hidden, so he can foresee? | |
| 36 | أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِي صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ |
| Did not the news reach him, of that which is mentioned in the Books of Moosa? | |
| 37 | وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ الَّذِي وَفَّىٰ |
| And of Ibrahim, who was most obedient? | |
| 38 | أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ |
| That no burdened soul bears another soul’s burden? | |
| 39 | وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ |
| And that man will not obtain anything except what he strove for? | |
| 40 | وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ |
| And that his effort will soon be scrutinised? | |
| 41 | ثُمَّ يُجْزَاهُ الْجَزَاءَ الْأَوْفَىٰ |
| Then he will be fully repaid for it? | |
| 42 | وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الْمُنتَهَىٰ |
| And that the end is only towards your Lord? | |
| 43 | وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ |
| And that it is He Who made (you) laugh and made (you) cry? | |
| 44 | وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا |
| And that it is He Who gave death and gave life? | |
| 45 | وَأَنَّهُ خَلَقَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ |
| And that it is He Who has created the two pairs, male and female? | |
| 46 | مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ |
| From a drop of liquid, when it is added? | |
| 47 | وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ |
| And that only upon Him is the next revival? | |
| 48 | وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ |
| And that it is He Who has given wealth and contentment? | |
| 49 | وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ رَبُّ الشِّعْرَىٰ |
| And that He only is the Lord of the star Sirius? | |
| 50 | وَأَنَّهُ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا الْأُولَىٰ |
| And that it is He Who earlier destroyed the tribe of Aad? | |
| 51 | وَثَمُودَ فَمَا أَبْقَىٰ |
| And destroyed the tribe of Thamud, not sparing anyone? | |
| 52 | وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ |
| And before them, the people of Nooh? Indeed they were more unjust and more rebellious than these! | |
| 53 | وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ |
| And that it is He Who threw down the upturned townships? | |
| 54 | فَغَشَّاهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ |
| So they were covered with whatever covered them? | |
| 55 | فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ |
| So O listener! Which favour of your Lord will you doubt? | |
| 56 | هَٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ النُّذُرِ الْأُولَىٰ |
| He (Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) is a Herald of Warning, like the former Heralds of Warning. | |
| 57 | أَزِفَتِ الْآزِفَةُ |
| The approaching event has come near. | |
| 58 | لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ |
| None except Allah can avert it. | |
| 59 | أَفَمِنْ هَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ |
| So are you surprised at this fact? | |
| 60 | وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ |
| And you laugh, and do not weep! | |
| 61 | وَأَنتُمْ سَامِدُونَ |
| And you are lost in play! | |
| 62 | فَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ وَاعْبُدُوا ۩ |
| Therefore prostrate for Allah, and worship Him. (Command of Prostration # 12) | |
