AL MUTAFFIFEEN (THE DEFRAUDERS)
(Revealed at Mecca – contains 36 verses – 1 section)
Allah – beginning with the name of – the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
| AYAT | TRANSLATION |
|---|---|
| 1 | وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ |
| Ruin is for the defrauders. (Those who measure less.) | |
| 2 | الَّذِينَ إِذَا اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ |
| Those who when they take the measure from others, take it in full! | |
| 3 | وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ |
| Whereas when they give others after measuring or weighing, they give them less! | |
| 4 | أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُولَٰئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ |
| What! Do they not expect that they will be raised? | |
| 5 | لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ |
| (To be raised) for a Great Day? | |
| 6 | يَوْمَ يَقُومُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ |
| The day when everyone will stand before the Lord Of The Creation. | |
| 7 | كَلَّا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ |
| Indeed, the record of the disbelievers is in the lowest place, the Sijjeen. | |
| 8 | وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ |
| And what do you know, how (wretched) the Sijjeen is! | |
| 9 | كِتَابٌ مَّرْقُومٌ |
| The record is a sealed text. | |
| 10 | وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ |
| Ruin is for the deniers on that day! | |
| 11 | الَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ |
| Those who deny the Day of Justice. | |
| 12 | وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ |
| And none will deny it, except every transgressor, rebel. | |
| 13 | إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ |
| When you recite Our verses to him, he says, “Stories of earlier men!” | |
| 14 | كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ |
| Not at all – but rather their earnings have heaped rust upon their hearts. | |
| 15 | كَلَّا إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ |
| Yes indeed – they will be deprived of seeing their Lord on that day. | |
| 16 | ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُو الْجَحِيمِ |
| Then indeed they have to enter hell. | |
| 17 | ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ |
| It will then be said, “This is what you used to deny.” | |
| 18 | كَلَّا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْأَبْرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ |
| Indeed the record of the virtuous is in the highest place, the Illiyin. | |
| 19 | وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ |
| And what do you know what the Illiyoon are! | |
| 20 | كِتَابٌ مَّرْقُومٌ |
| The record is a sealed text. | |
| 21 | يَشْهَدُهُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ |
| Which is witnessed by the close ones. | |
| 22 | إِنَّ الْأَبْرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ |
| Indeed the virtuous are in serenity. | |
| 23 | عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ يَنظُرُونَ |
| On thrones, watching. | |
| 24 | تَعْرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ النَّعِيمِ |
| You will recognise the freshness of serenity on their faces. | |
| 25 | يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ |
| They will be given pure wine to drink, which is kept preserved, sealed. | |
| 26 | خِتَامُهُ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ |
| Its seal is upon musk; and for this should those who crave be eager. | |
| 27 | وَمِزَاجُهُ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ |
| And it is mixed with Tasneem. | |
| 28 | عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا الْمُقَرَّبُونَ |
| The spring from which drink the ones close to Allah. | |
| 29 | إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا كَانُوا مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يَضْحَكُونَ |
| Indeed the guilty used to laugh at the believers. | |
| 30 | وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ |
| And when the believers used to pass by, they used to gesture at each other with their eyes. | |
| 31 | وَإِذَا انقَلَبُوا إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِمُ انقَلَبُوا فَكِهِينَ |
| And whilst returning to their homes, they used to return rejoicing. | |
| 32 | وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوا إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَضَالُّونَ |
| And upon seeing the Muslims, they used to say, “Indeed they have gone astray.” | |
| 33 | وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظِينَ |
| Whereas they have not at all been sent as guardians over them. | |
| 34 | فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ |
| So this day it is the believers who laugh at the disbelievers. | |
| 35 | عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ يَنظُرُونَ |
| On high thrones, watching. | |
| 36 | هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ |
| Did not the disbelievers get repaid for what they used to do? | |
